All About Eyes: Part 2

In Part 1 of our All About Eyes series, we went over eye products. In order to master eye makeup techniques, you need to first know what your eye shape is:

ALMOND: These are the most common eye shape with their upswept lift at the outer corner.

WIDE-SET: If there is generous space between both eyes in relation to the porportion of the rest of the face.

CLOSE-SET: If there is little space between both eyes in relation to the porportion of the rest of the face.

DEEP-SET: If you can see some of your eye lid in the outer corners of your eyes, but this section of eye lid narrows as it gets closer to the inside corners of your eyes.

PROMINENT EYES: These eyes which set far forward in the face tend to dominate the facial features. The eyelids are too pronounced.

ASIAN: Not very distinct eye shape and often without a prominent crease.

HOODED: Your eye lids are droopy and sag which gives the appearance of no-crease.

ROUND: As their name suggests, this eye shape is round and doll-like.

SMALL EYES: They are proportionately smaller in comparison to the rest of the facial features.

After you have determined your eye shape, you need to know what works best for it. The chart below (borrowed from specktra.net) is great for beginners in determining where to place eyeshadow to best enhance your eyes. Keep reading after the jump to see the chart and techniques for YOUR eye shape:

FYI: ‘Highlighter shade’ is an eyeshadow shade that is light in color. It can come in different textures such as matte or shimmer. Remember that lighter shades make objects appear larger or project them. ‘Deep Shade’ is an eyeshadow color that is deeper than your skin tone. It can also come in matte or shimmer. Keep in mind that deeper shades make objects recede or appear smaller. ‘Accent shade’ is a color that complements the Deep shade. It is often a more colorful shade.

Wide-set eyes: (courtesy of webindia123.com) It tends to give your face an open, youthful appearance. This look can be intensified by applying the strongest eye makeup effects near the outer corner of the eye. Keep shadow uniform and within outer corners. Brush lashes straight up. You can tell if you have wide-set eyes if there is more than eye’s width of space in between your eyes.

To make the eyes appear closer together,

* Use more intense eye shadow colours near the inner corner of the eyes.
* Line eyes completely – top and bottom – from inner to outer corners.
* Apply a medium-toned shadow to lids and creases, concentrating the colour on the inner corners.
* Use mascara generously, on both upper and lower lashes.

Close-set eyes: (also courtesy of webindia123.com) This eye have a dramatic, sultry look. It can be enhanced by concentrating colour near the eye’s inner corners. Extend smoky shadow beyond outer corners to exaggerate them. Brush lashes out. You can tell if you have close-set eyes if you have less than an eye’s width of space in between your eyes. (Evenly-spaced eyes have just about exactly an eye’s width of space between them)

To make the eyes seem farther apart,

* Apply the most intense colour near the outer corners of the eyes.
* Line top and bottom of eyes in any colour, but begin drawing a quarter of the way out from the inner eye.
* Smudge lines.
* Dust a highlighter (or light-coloured eyeshadow) just below the outer corners of lower
lashes to call attention to the outsides of eyes.
* Brush mascara on to upper and lower lashes.

Stay tuned for the continuation of the All About Eyes Series!
