Wardrobe Basics

In this post, My Urban Glamour Blog vowed to help you make 2009 your most fashionable year to date! And just a few days shy of the new year, we’re already starting to tackle one new year’s resolution: building a stylish wardrobe!

The key to a stylish wardrobe is to first cover the basics. Every wardrobe must have several basic items that can be worn season after season, year after year and that with some smart accessories (or a crafty hand) can be made to look into thousands of different outfits. Now, you might be looking at the list below and thinking “How do we remain individuals if we all have the same basic items in our closets?”. Well, it’s also important to remember your personality and lifestyle when choosing these pieces—there’s millions of little white tees out there—you have to find the one that suits you the best! (pssst….you also have the tools to figure out exactly what suits you right here on this blog with categories like big breasts, big tummy, boyish frame, long torso, love your body, mommy-to-be, petite, plus-size, small breasts, thick thighs, what’s your season, Urban Glamour Style Tip, and what’s your style).

The Basics are:

1. A Trench Coat: to avoid looking Inspector Gadget-esque, be sure to go for a more fitted style.

2. A Basic Short Sleeve Tee: for hanging out on the weekend or to give a more hipster look underneath your suit jacket.

3. A Crisp Blouse: for work or for play, this classic piece will go a long way

4. A Basic Tank Top: for layering or for those hot summer days

5. Classic High Heel Pumps: wear them with dress pants, skirts, or even your jeans

6. The Little Black Dress: for work functions or special nights out (or even tucked under a cute cardigan for daytime)

7. Great-Fitting Dark Denim Jeans: dark denim is widely flattering and gives jeans an aire of sophistication; your best fitting pair makes your legs look long, your thighs slim, and your butt look fabulous

8. Black Dress Pants: for work or even on the weekend with a tee shirt

9. A Little Black Skirt: for work or for play

10. A Fitted Dress Jacket: the must-have component for the power suit, but can also be teamed up with jeans. Always break suits up into separates to multiply your wardrobing options.

11. A Cardigan Sweater: this cute cover-up can be worn with just about anything

12. Funky Flat Shoes: preferably in an accent color and worn best with pants

13. A Statement Bag: doesn’t have to cost a fortune, but must add character to any outfit

You want to make sure you go for the highest quality you can afford when choosing your basic wardrobe items since you want these to last you a long time. Once you get your basics down, you then add shoes and accessories every three months or so to keep up with what’s in style for the season. If there are any new fashion trends you want to try out, go ahead and indulge, but try not to spend more than the average cost of your basic items since trends come and go and often will take a back seat to your basics the very next season.

Stay tuned to My Urban Glamour Blog because we will be covering this topic many times over in ’09!
