Your Hairstories

What’s your hair’s history? How do you wear it now? How do you feel about your hair?

This post was prompted by an odd hair experience I had today where someone commented (out of the blue) “My hair is almost as short as yours now!” about her recent trim gone wrong. Now while my hair isn’t flowing down to BSL (bra strap length) it also isn’t “short” so I asked her what she meant and she goes “I mean, my hair isn’t as long as yours now”. I found the situation to be strange, but also thought maybe I was being too sensitive so I took to twitter and posed this question. Turns out I’m not the only one who thought her comment was odd. What makes it even odder is that I don’t get into the whole “comparing hair lengths” thing because it’s pointless. As long as your hair is healthy who cares what length, texture, or color it is—right? Right?

I’ve personally gone from really short hair in junior high to growing it out in high school to having long hair after college to getting a really bad haircut because I wanted “a change” after a breakup (that haircut wound up being very mullet-like *sigh*). I’ve also had my hair break off from a bad salon color job. Now I’m still trying to grow out the mullet using methods like stretching out my relaxer, no-pooing (where you cleanse your hair with conditioner), and as always weekly deep conditioners. I’ve even thought about ridding my hair of relaxers but somehow I wind up in a salon chair every 3 months for a touch-up and then weep for days at the loss of my new growth.

So that’s my story, tell me yours in the comment section! Have you ever had a weird encounter about your hair like I did? Tell me!

I haven’t experienced anything like that (how random!), but my hair hanges on a whim. I go between natural and relaxed every couple of years.

I’ve been blessed to have a beautician as a momma so since a young age shes been taking care of my hair. Now all my life my hair was long I mean people didnt even know my name.. it was always ‘Oh the tall, brownskin girl, with the long hair.’ Yeah I was so over it. So I cut my as you say Dani BSL hair and you wouldve thought I cut my arm off with the reactions from people. Now my hair is growing back pretty fast so I think Ima do a Taraji durring the Emmy’s not what she’s rocking right now.

The only thing that pissed me off about the cut was ppl saying ‘Girl dont you know a black girl with real long hair is the best… now you just common’

LOL—have you ever seen the episode of The Game where Melanie randomly cut one side of her hair off and Tasha goes “Every time you cut long hair, somewhere a little black girl cries” or something like that…lol. It’s funny how other people have an attachment with YOUR hair. Grrr!

The Taraji Emmy cut sounds hot! Let me know what you wind up doing ;)

I love hairstories! I’ve had my hair relaxed as long as I can remember. After moving to DC for med school I decided to see a dominican hairstylist biweekly who grew my hair past my shoulder blades (the longest it had ever been). I eventually stopped going because funds got low and I decided to take matters into my own hands. My hair took a turn for the worse as a result of my lack of skill and after getting fed up, and with the support of my bf, I decided to go stop relaxing this past March. After three months me and my honey decided to cut all off the relaxed hair of and it was the best decision ever. I rock a coily fro everyday, and I am finding it is a way more flattering look for me. Even the beautiful model Gelila Bekele complimented my hair at Sephora in Soho!!! I was floored, yep, best decision ever! :)

I love them, too…lol. You’re in med school? CONGRATS, girlie! What type of medicine will you be practicing?

Don’t you just love comments especially when they come from beautiful people like her? lol

I go back and forth with wanting to go natural and wind up in the damn salon chair getting a touch-up (and then I weep for the loss of my new growth’s texture for DAYS…lol)

Thanks!!! Not sure what type of medicine I want to practice (got two more years left) but I am leaning towards cardiology. I love this site bc I know no one else who loves to talk beauty and products as much as me! Reading your site is a great way to unwind at the end of the day.
