Ask Danielle: How Not to Be a Fashion Slave
The Style and Beauty Doctor reader Candice writes in asking, “How do you develop a personal style, without getting caught up in the trends. I tend to like more classic styles, but I like trendy too. How do you balance both, without looking like a walking current fashion advertisement, but without looking plain or simple?”
In order to look stylish without looking like you tried too hard (or like a member of The Pussycat Dolls), the idea is to first start with a wardrobe filled with timeless, classic items (see Wardrobe Basics for a quick refresher). Now I bet you’re thinking if you have a wardrobe filled with basics, then your wardrobe will be—well, basic. Not if you follow my tips!
The idea is to take your “basics” and think “un-basic”. So for instance, the white button down blouse is a wardrobe staple. Instead of getting the classic fit, go for a white blouse with ruffles on the neckline or unique detailing. Or if you’re going for a suit, instead of the classic fit, go for something different like the boyfriend (oversized) fit for the jacket and a tapered (skinny) fit for the pants. Another way to make basics become not-so-basic is to go with a bright color. Surprisingly, colors like cobalt blue, royal purple, and hot pink can actually act as neutrals in your wardrobe so you won’t have to worry about these colors not matching with other items in your wardrobe.
It’s okay to indulge in new trends, but don’t get carried away. Don’t do more than 2 trends at one time or risk looking like the tragic fashion victim you’re trying to avoid. The easiest and most simple way to do a new trend is through accessories. For example, the biker chic look is trending right now. A way to pay homage to the trend would be to add some fitted leather gloves or a spiked bracelet to a classic outfit. In other words, take elements from the trend and work them into your wardrobe.
Hair and makeup are both great ways to jazz up a basic look. A bold lipstick color (red is a hot look this fall) even without any other makeup can instantly take a boring tee and jeans outfit and make it couture (ok, maybe not that far, but you get what I mean!). Play around with eye makeup and even nail polish colors to add some punch to your wardrobe. A flattering (and funky) hairstyle will also take your look to the next level. For some ideas on what’s hot this season, check out Fall 2009 Beauty Trends from Allure. Also find out which hairstyles flatter your face shape.
You’ll also need a signature–something that you’re known for. It can be cute embellished bags, vintage jackets, or colorful eye makeup–just find something that’s YOU and go for it.
If all else fails, add a statement jacket, an oversized bag, and some high heels for instance fierceness.
P.S. The great thing about this blog is that you get to pick my brain on any style inquiries you have. I’ve done my time studying the craft (2 years at the Fashion Institute of Technology, some NYC Fashion Week shows, and 5 years of styling and makeup business experience) so ask away!

Hi there,
Interesting, I`ll quote it on my site later.
Thanks for the response Danielle! It’s great advice, I will be taking heed when I shop for some fall pieces.
No problem!
