A/W 09 Catwalk Report

My favorite thing to do on late Saturday or Sunday afternoons is to drive to Barnes & Noble and check out all the international fashion magazines. Don’t get me wrong, I pledge allegiance to my American mags, but editions of Harper’s Bazaar, Elle, and Vogue from countries like the UK, Italy, and France make my heart really skip a beat. One of my favorites is Harper’s Bazaar UK. This month’s issue (shown above) features actress Rachel Weisz looking FIERCE IN Giorgio Armani and gives us a rundown of all next season’s trends. Let’s take a look at a few:

1. Schiaparelli:

Think statement jackets (like the ones seen at Balmain), MAJOR platform heels, sharp details, bold costume jewelry. Think Sasha Fierce—but with bottoms on.

How to Wear It: Update your look instantly with exaggerated heels and shoulder pads. Buy pieces with waist-cinching cuts. Finish the look with bold costume jewelry.

2. Houndstooth & Tweed:

Think old English suits–the kind your dad used to wear but with feminine cuts.

How to Wear It: Pair the look with Autumn’s sexy stilettos. Balance the rough textures with smooth, neat hair. For jewelry, stick to shades of silver and black.

3. French Polish:

Think very feminine fitted suits–the kind Chanel famously designs.

How to Wear It: Keep skirts figure-hugging and suits cinched. Add a little lace or velvet. Grooming–nails, hair, make-up–is key.

4. Block Color:

Think bright, rich colors.

How to Wear It: This trend is not about clashing brights–go for a single color against black. Either skip the jewelry or stick to silver or gold.

5. Androgyny:

Think girl meets boy’s wardrobe and makes it her own!

androgyny

How to Wear It: Men’s fabrics look best with an uncluttered neckline. Add a tough edge with a chic zipped or studded clutch. Step out in flat brogues or sky-high shoe-boots.

6. The Eighties:

Think a modern version of 80s Michael Jackson and Madonna meets Manhattan night club.

How to Wear It: Add a touch of leather in bright hues or biker-black. The one-sleeve dress is an instant update. Match with an elegant reworking of eighties make-up.

If you love these looks but your bank account doesn’t, check out retailers like Express, Topshop, Zara, Steve Madden, and80spurple.comfor the look for less.

Now you tell me—which trends are your favorite for next season?

Girl, I’m about to take a trip into the city where I’ll have access to even more fashion mags from more countries…lol. I love the French Polish look, too. My fav is Schiaparelli :)
