Your Hair or Your Workout?

Have you ever had to make the choice between your hair or your workout? Well for tons of women their hair takes precedence over their workout often because of the carefully plotted routines they go through to maintain their ‘do. Now as someone who chemically alters her hair every 3 months, I know all too well how much a sweaty workout can ruin your look, but as someone who recently lost 25 pounds I’m also now someone who would rather have a hot body than hot hair. But can’t a girl have both?

When I was going to the hair salon for a weekly blowout, I would just make sure I started my workouts two days after I got it done. At least that way I got two days to wear my hair out. Then on the third day I would wrap my hair and secure it with a hair scarf while getting into my routine. Surprisingly this helped to hold my style even though I sweat like a man when I workout.

Then I decided I wanted to ease up on the heat and grow my hair out, so I stopped going to the salon and opted to do daily co-washes instead. This is perfect for my workout routine because I get to rinse the salt from my sweat off my scalp and since I use conditioner to wash my hair instead of shampoo, I don’t make my dry hair even drier (which will only cause it to break). I let my hair air dry overnight and just put it in a loose bun or ponytail in the morning. Sure, it’s not completely daring or exciting, but I get to keep the hair on my head AND get my Kanye workout plan on. I just wear more makeup to break up the monotony…lol.

Now let’s talk—are you sacrificing your workout for your hair? Tell me in the comments!

I haven’t exercised since I started transitioning a year ago. It’s in part b/c of medical school but also b/c of my hair. I’ve kept it short for a long time, and transitioning to natural from a short style (especially when you refuse to cut your permed ends) takes a LOT of maintenance. I would get blowouts, but to make sure they lasted for the two weeks I wanted (so I’d only put heat on it 2-3 times a month) I’d have to avoid swearing at all costs. Can’t do wash-and-gos b/c of my straight ends, so I’ve resorted to just keeping my hair in weave, although it’s always my last resort style, so I don’t really like it that much. When this semester lets up a bit, I’ll start exercising again.
