Keep it Tight

elle uk tights

Across the pond at Elle UK, street fashion savvy fashionistas were spotted wearing tights in bold colors and graphic prints. They can be a trendy way to spruce up your winter wardrobe and are relatively inexpensive.

Some tight tips:
1. Darker colors make objects appear smaller, while lighter colors make objects appear larger. So if you have a pair of thick legs, your best bet would be to go for a darker color like navy blue or burgundy.
2. Be careful with prints. Horizontal prints make objects appear shorter and wider (which isn’t particularly flattering on bigger legs) while vertical prints make objects appear longer and more narrow (which will make very skinny legs look even skinnier).
3. Use a funky pair of tights as an accent and keep everything else pretty understated. Too many punctuation pieces can look overdone and costumey.
4. No white tights unless you’re under the age of 6.

I am the Queen of Tights! Ask any of my friends. :-) I jumped on the tights bandwagon when leggings were still “hot” b/c I was sick of them. Now they’re making lots more innovative leggings, but I feel like leggings are pretty much over, especially now that they are used as pants. *shudder* What do you think? Of course, I’d buy another pair if they just bowled me over, but usually I can find a similar or exact version in tights, making that unnecessary.

For Rule #4, does it count if they’re ivory lace? Lol, I got some awesome ones from this sock store in London (don’t remember the name, but it was an entire store dedicated to a million variations of my #1 favorite accessory!), and I think they look fab w/ my (old but still a favorite) knee-high Minnetonkas and a cool, loose dress. Should I give ‘em the old heave-ho? Let me know, doc! :-)

I’m not a leggings person myself unless I’m wearing them under pants on cold winter days, but I see some people they look really cute on. The thing with leggings is that you see them everywhere and I like to be a little different and more imaginative. I’m definitely not a fan of leggings as pants unless you’re an R&B super star on a stage performing…lol.

Send a pic of your ivory lace tights and the dress to danielle[at]myurbanglamour[dot]com and I’ll let you know :)
