How to Dress When You’re Losing/Gaining Weight

(This post was updated in 2019 to add the video above—watch the video for tips and then find additional tips I wrote back in 2008 below)

It seems like one day I was a loose size 8, then next thing I knew I’m almost a tight size 12! In the last 2 years or so, I’ve gained some weight and while I can’t see it, my wardrobe and my family can. At 5’9″ I weigh about 192 pounds–my “ideal” weight is somewhere around 150 (which even in my slimmer days I could never achieve with my breasts, hips, and thighs).

It’s hard not to freak out after some weight gain, especially when your clothes don’t fit you the same. But at the same time, do not let a fluctuating waistline affect your fashionable tastes! Here’s some quick tips on how to dress when you’re losing or gaining weight without having to buy a completely new wardrobe:

1. Accessorize. For the most part, accessories are one size fits all. Jazz up your wardrobe with funky shoes and jewelry.

2. Belts. A belt is your best friend especially when losing weight because you can use it to cinch clothing that has become a bit too loose on you. There are so many fab options in the belt department these days so your outfit options are limitless.

3. Discount Retailers. Stores like Old Navy that sell decently-cut and super affordable basics are great for buying transition clothing. You definitely don’t want to spend a fortune on something that in a month or two won’t fit, but you also want it to last you more than 2 wears.

4. Makeup and Hair. Something as simple as blush or a pretty lip gloss can do much to brighten up your mood. And while hair may be something you’re thinking of last when working out, there are tons of cute updos and other simple styles that you can wear to keep you looking hot. I know that even when I’m feeling the most self-conscious about my weight, when my hair and makeup looks nice, I feel MUCH better.

5. Self-Confidence. This should really be number one. You can have on the best outfit, the best makeup, and the best hairdo but without self-confidence, you won’t be able to pull it off. Start appreciating your good qualities more instead of focusing on your flaws and slowly but surely, you’ll be more secure.

my weight loss has been stalled for awhile, but i definitely agree, when i take the time to get my face together and make an attempt with my hair, it helps my confidence sooo much. i’m able to strut my stuff….all 240 lbs of it! (down from 274, yay!)
