Ask Danielle: Lip Stains

The Style and Beauty Doctor reader Niqua wrote in asking, “Hi Danielle,
So my boyfriend and I went to see Transformers 3 and I was in love with Rosie Huntington-Whiteley lip color. I was wondering if there is a way that a girl with a chocolate complexion could recreate that, especially with MAC or Sephora product. Also, it would be cool if you did a blog on lipstained looks“.

Hey Niqua!

Sure thing—I haven’t tried all of the dozens of lip stains out there but the first one that comes to mind is tarte. It’s almost like tarte wrote the book on all things color stain with their infamous Cheek Tint and Natural Lip Stain products, but they also have really nice stains in pencil form. I’m currently obsessed with their LipSurgence Natural Matte Lip Tint.

For chocolate complexions, the best lip stains are berry colored (berry is also universally flattering amongst all skin tones) and those that are red or bright pink in color. Basically the more pigmented and vibrant colored the stain the better for darker skin.

I like a stain because it tends to last longer than gloss which for me means more snacking without additional lip touch-ups…lol. You can also create a stain by applying lip balm on your lips, then your favorite lipstick, and then take a napkin and blot down the color.

Have fun picking out your new lip stain, Niqua! Be sure to let us know which one you get :)

Thanks again Danielle, So I definitely think I’ll try tarte natural lipsurgence matte lip tint. It seems like the best overall product and all of the colors look amazing. I think I want to try one of the lighter colors because I’m going for a more natural pink color even though the dark colors are probably safer. I think I’m going to try lucky, exposed, or hope and see which would give me the most natural color with my complexion. Please let me know if you any opinion about those three. Also I’ve tried maybelline color sensational….my experience was less than sensational lol. I got a medium pink color that I saw in the ad and it wouldn’t show up on my lips even after I put concealer on my lips beforehand.
