Ask Danielle: Ways to Style a Pixie Cut

The Style and Beauty Doctor reader Lily wrote in asking, “Hey Danielle! First off, I just wanna say your blog is amazing and a lifesaver for most days when I’m stuck in a rut, and I also love your pieces that are featured on the Fashion Bomb. My question is…I’ve recently took a big step and chopped off my hair into a Rihanna/Kelis-ish pixie and I’m having a little trouble finding different ways to style it. It would be awesome if you could do a how-to post for some inspiration. Thanks a bunch and keep on doing what you do!

Hey Lily!

Thanks so much! I’m really glad my site has helped you get through those ruts :)

A pixie cut is such a cute style and I can totally relate on finding different styles as I just recently cut my hair after transitioning out of a relaxer. One way to work with a pixie is to play around with texture. You can have the sides tapered and then use hair styling wax (see Rene Furterer Styling Wax with Tips from Celeb Hairstylist Amoy Pitters) to manipulate the top layers.

You can also buy a clip-in bang and add some length to the top of your ‘do (a trick I learned from Indique Hair co-founder Ericka Dotson whose Glam Survival Kit includes a clip-in bang and extensions).

You can kick things up a notch by also adding in colored extensions (safer than trying hair color if you already use another chemical process) or by wearing cute hair accessories like the ones I put together in the widget below.

You can also turn to wigs for quick new looks. Thankfully wigs have come a long way and more women are turning to them for a change of hairstyle without any commitment. In fact I bought a curly/kinky one myself over the weekend…lol.

Hope this helps you out, Lily! I’d love for you to keep in touch with me and send over some of your style pics :)
