Event Recap: Texture on the Runway

Since it’s impossible (and spooky) for me to be in two places at the same time, my buddy freelance writer and blogger Candace of LDV Fashion Fix graciously stepped in and covered the Texture on the Runway show in New York City for me while I was on my flight to Las Vegas for MAGIC. Check out her recap and interview with head hairstylist Nick Arrojo (yep, of TLC’s “What Not to Wear” fame). Thanks, Candace!

Kinks, curls and coils took center stage last night for TextureMedia’s hair-focused runway show, Texture on the Runway. As a curly girl myself, this unprecedented event was a big idea to debut in the center of New York Fashion Week. Attendees were not to be out done by the the dramatic hairstyles featured in the show, as everywhere you turned there was a beautiful look to feast your eyes on — from luscious locs with gorgeous color, to twist-outs and bouncy curls. The event was hosted by Michelle Breyer of TextureMedia and YouTube’s very own natural hair star, Taren Guy (Taren916). Can I just say that Taren is drop dead gorgeous in person? No, literally those videos don’t do her beauty justice. The brands that celebrated naturally textured hair included Arrojo, Matrix, Curls Unleashed, Hair Rules, CURLS, Minardi Luxury Color Care, Modern Salon and Cosmo Prof.

Right now, natural hair is the center of discussion. You have those that have taken the leap, leaving their relaxed hair behind, those that are curious to see what’s on the other side, and many who have embraced their natural hair texture and are loving every minute of it. The show itself was informative providing insight for all women no matter what side of the discussion you stand on. I arrived at 5:30, just as the stylists were putting the final touches on the models. I grabbed Nick Arrojo, owner of Arrojo salon and products, and previously of TLC’s What Not to Wear, to get the low-down on maintenance.

Candace: What was your inspiration for creating the hair for this show?

Nick Arrojo: The inspiration was American wave. We used a permanent re-texturizer to create curl. We took that as the inspiration.

C: What are your must-have products and tools for curly, wavy, and kinky hair?

NA: The must-have products for textured hair are (of course all Arrojo) Frizz Control Creme, Curl Creme and Styling Whip, and Leave-in Conditioner.

C: How can women at home achieve these looks?

NA: The whole concept is to create a hairstyle that you can wash and wear. These styles are designed to be easy to create at home. It’s about the products and the technique.
