The 7 Summer TV Shows We’ll Be Watching And You Should, Too…
Yes, we love our fashion and beauty here at The Style and Beauty Doctor, but we also LOVE entertainment. From movies to television we’ll be hashing over reality TV stars, the red carpet, and more and of course we’ll do it in our cleverly witty ways ;) I’m very pleased to bring on our new Entertainment Contributor Jade Banks. Remember when there wasn’t a summer season at all for new shows? Those were dark and bleak times.
Here she gives us her top 7 picks for summer TV shows. Check it out!
It seemed like all of our favorite shows this year left us with unbearable cliff hangers. From wondering who in the world is the naïve little brunette of Olivia Pope’s team of fixers on “Scandal” to holding your breath as Meredith and Christina try to survive in the wilderness after a random plane crash on “Grey’s Anatomy”, I personally don’t know how I’m going to make it until September. I’m happy to report that there are tons of entertaining television shows coming on the boob tube this summer to distract us.
1. True Blood.
Sookie Stackhouse returns as the desire of all vampires and wolves alike in this season of “True Blood”. I cannot wait for the crazy battles, the sexy love scenes, and the wit of my favorite character, Lafayette (Side note: Was anyone else totally UPSET that Lafayette’s boo thang died last season!?). Never seen the show? Think of Twilight with a NC-17 rating…oh yea! The season premieres on Sunday on HBO.
2. Dallas.
My mom and grandmother used to talk all the time about this show and their love for JR. Who is this JR? Finally we’ll get a taste of the show that was included in Time Magazine’s “100 Best TV Shows of All-TIME.” Tune in June 13th on TNT.
3. SNOOKI and JWOWW.
It’s summer so feel free to turn your brain off and tune into the antics of our favorite ladies of “Jersey Shore”, Snooki and Jwoww. This spinoff follows Jwoww and a pregnant Snooki (let’s all have a moment of silence for this child that will be raised by crazy behind Snooki!) as they take on Atlantic City. The series premieres on June 21st on MTV.
4. Common Law.
Two words…MICHAEL EALY. Enough said (Yes I’m shallow like that. Sue me.)
5. Unnecessary Roughness.
Once again only two words are needed, but I’ll elaborate. The delicious Mechad Brooks (the shallow side of me strikes again) stars in this USA original show and looks sexy doing it. Brooks reprises his role as the self-centered football star TK, whose life is in shambles and has to be worked out by his sassy therapist. Check it out on USA on June 6th.
6. L.A. Hair.
Want the ambiance of a black salon without the day-long appointment? Tune into Kim Kimble’s new show, “L.A. Hair”. The show follows celebrity stylist Kim Kimble and her crazy team of stylists. You can catch the show on Thursdays on WE.
7. Single Ladies.
The exit of Stacy Dash didn’t stop this show. “Single Ladies” is back with a new cast member (Is anyone else seeing how similar Denise Vasi‘s character is to Val in looks and personality?) and all the drama, love, and fashion a woman can find in Atlanta. The show airs on Mondays on VH1.
These are just a few of my picks that I’ll be watching this summer. Let us know what you think.

I’m definitely going to have to check out Common Law and Unnecessary Roughness for the same shallow reasons as you. I watched the first episode of Single Ladies after seeing all the tweets about it. Honestly the acting could be improved but the styling is great! Hopefully things will get better

While most of these summer shows are great, ” I don’t have a date tonight” or “No one invited me to a cookout tonight” entertainment…. I am really surprised that the writing/editing isn’t better. Okay, I’ll admit it… as long as they keep alot of foolishness going on, if I have some place to be, I’m going to DVR it. Thanks for keeping me in the loop.
All good shows to watch – minus TrueBlood(never got into it) BUT including Michael Ealy!!!! Whooo! But the shows I’m loving for summer are Rizzoli & Isles and Leverage (if we’re being shallow -Aldis Hodge & Christian Kane hotness on Leverage) both on TNT as well as So You Think You Can Dance – this season the dancers being sent to Vegas are amazing and ATL turned out a ridiculous amount of talent.
All great choices. I’m a huge fan of the USA shows. Common Law & Un Rough are all favs on my dvr list. Great piece. Can’t wait to see your fall line-up suggestions. Maybe Suits and Burn Notice will make the list.
I will definitely be watching several of these. Though I followed the first season of Single Ladies, the episodes this season have caused me to question my judgement. Hopefully, it will get better, but if not, I still have Unnecessary Roughness, my favorite on the list.
They all sound so interesting,What a line up !!!!, I know Comman Law will be on the must see list, *Michael Ealy* I will more then likely catch them all. Unnecessary Rough really stands as well.
common law…..now that’s some “eye-candy” for the ladies!!!
can’t and won’t get enough of it.
I LOVE Dallas!!! When it was on originally in 1978 I was in graduate school and typed (yes on a typewritter) my Masters thesis during commercials. All my friends would call each other to discuss each plot twist – and the clothes – I went right out to Neiman Marcus so that I had a dress like Sue Ellen and Pamela Ewing.
Ahh, DALLAS? Do you remember the discussions as people from all over the world discussed, ” Who shot JR?” From the trailers for the new “Dallas,” it looks as if the hypnotic magic will still be there. As for the other programs, I did get glimpses of “Unnecessary Roughness” and “Common Law” earlier this week. My thoughts: Not bad. As far as programs like “Single Ladies” and “Snooki and JWoww”, certainly not my speed.
Ahhh, yes, Dallas and Falcon Crest, who could forget? I remember waiting for the weekend so I could watch Dallas. I was always a fan of Bobby. I’m looking forward to the new season.
In addition to my addiction to Law and Order…I heart The Game…super glad to see Single Ladies is hitting the scene again….super fashionable tv show….also, this new show LA Hair sounds pretty cool….great post! Thanks for keeping this fashionista in the loop!
I’m so excited about all of these shows! Common Law being one of my favorites and Single Ladies being a guilty pleasure of mine. I’m really interested in what they’re going to do with Dallas. It’s such a legend I hope it lives up to the original. Great recs though I’ll definitely be tuning in to most of these!
Truly for me the only show I would have a slight interest in would be Dallas. Yes, I am an admitted watcher of the original show aired during the 80′s when cable was just making an appearance and network television still ruled as king.
I cannot say whether or not I will be a regular watcher but at least I can see whether the storyline is interesting at all.
I am as shallow as you and proud of it!
The styles are so great and I just love them. All I watch is the news, but because of you Jade I will watch some of the shows. I know they should be great!!
Wow! This site is amazing. You have done a wonderful job with your writing. It was very entertaining and I would recommend my friends to visit. My favorite post was the about Necessary Roughness. I have never watched one episode and from reading the post it seems very intriguing. Great Work!
Great article Jade. I am so excited for the next season of True Blood and Single Ladies. Common Law is a great show and yes Michael Ealy is fine! Lol I have never seen Dallas but I am definitely going to watch it now! I’m going to watch all the shows you wrote about in your article! :)
One show that I have just started watching in LA Hair….so far so good. I will definately be tunning in to watch the next eposide. I could not wait until Single Ladies had came back…now I am having mixed feeling about the show…I am hoping the the story line will pick up. I definately did not know that Dallas was coming back…I used to watch that all the time along with Falcon Crest. Can’t wait to see how this is going to be.
I love Necessary Roughness will continue to watch the show this summer. Single Ladies first two episodes are not that good, but I will tune in to LA Hair.
While most of these cater to a more female audience moreso than anything, Common Law and Unnecessary Roughness are great shows that cater to everyone and I happen to like them already. Can’t wait to see what more these shows have to offer and what shows like Jwoww and Snooki are going to be like several episodes into the series. Good article. Kept me well informed.
Aside from “The First 48 hrs”, ESPN, and Christian Television, I rarely watch TV shows; however, Jade you have definitely sparked interest in my selection of TV shows to watch. I may have to flip the channel a little more often this summer. It’s like you new the “intricate parts of my heart” when writing this article. I’m definetely persuaded.
Jade is right… Mechad Brooks is DEE-LI- SHUS!!!!!!!!!!!! I started watching the show last summer strictly to see that man!!! Whooooooooo! It’s a really good show (especially with all the eye candy!!!)
I’m also doing Dallas (for nostalgic reasons… my Mom used to watch it too!!!!! )
You are right on the money with “Single Ladies”… the look-alike replacement… I don’t like it when shows do that, so I won’t be watching that one.
But I will add L.A. Hair to my summer list!!!!!! I just wish I had enough time to add Common Law… that Michael Ealy is just ………. FINEEEEEEE!!!! (And no Jade you are not shallow… just a woman who appreciates the fineness!!!!!!!)
It’s going to be a good summer for TV!!
GREAT JOB JADE!!!!!!!!!!!!
LA Hair is a must sse! Love this show with all the glam, glitz and REAL people.
So far, have only checked out “Single Ladies” on your must see summer shows. But because of your comments, particularly on the shows with the “Eye Candy” (which is always refreshing), I”m gonna have to check out at least two more shows this summer maybe even more. Great job getting me interested and curious.
You have peeked my interest, I will check out some of these shows over the summer, just saw the previews for L.A. Hair and Common Law. I can’t wait to sit back with the remote…and snacks of course! Good thing I just cleaned out my DVR… all ready for summer viewing.
i’ll probably tune in to la hair and dallas, i’ve been waiting for that one since last summer! i’ll also be tuning in to tia and tamera’s show since i love those two as well
Great review. I’ll be watching Dallas!
like there wasn’t enough to waste time on, now you go and make this stuff sound interesting. some of it anyway–i’ve got my own shallow pleasures, thanks.
Twin you’ve done it again! Agreed and agreed on all shows plus kudos for number 1 :) even though we can’t watch it together it’ll make me happy knowing we’re watching it at the same time lol keep up the good work!
All these shows are my FAV!!!!! You hit it right on the head!!! Especially True Blood I can’t wait!!! I’m kinda interested to see how this Common Law show is going to be but aside from that I will mos def be glued to the television this summer!!! I love your recommendations!
You have me sold on True Blood. I’m ALWAYS so late with watching stuff that everyone has already loved…lol. I didn’t get into “Lost” until I saw the promo for the very last episode, so I sat in front of my computer every night for like two months and watched seasons 1-6 on Netflix…lol. I actually prefer watching TV that way because I don’t have to wait all summer for the new season to start…lol.
I’m totally watching “L.A. Hair” and “Necessary Roughness” seems like something I seriously need to get into.
GREAT POST, JADE!!!
You are right on “Dallas.” Having read your endorsement and now EWs, I will have to tune in. Re: Truye Blood, maybe it is my male bias but Pam’s wit also ranks. Glad I found this site. Thanks.
But Q on Unnec. R: is it just eye candy, or does it actually tread water. Sounds like a terrific idea if well-executed.
I have already started watching Single Ladies! I hopes it’s as good as the first season! Common Law sounds interesting too…I may have to check it out!
Michael Ealy… Yummy! Guess what I’ll be watching ; ) lol fabulous article by the way!
I really enjoyed necessary roughness last season…I am looking forward to it coming on again. Common Law was also great. I can’t believe that Dallas is coming back on! That was a favorite back in the day. I’m looking forward to relaxing and watching some tv. Thanks for the recommendations!
@J-Mart Unneccessary Roughness has a great story line. I mean even if the football player wasn’t cute I’d still tune in. The show has a great seasoned ensemble cast. You should so tune in.
@Jay Yes ! Michael Ealy. It takes forever for movies to come out so now we can see him every week ! YAHOO! Lol
Thanks for the update on whats going to be hot this summer. I will be checking out these show based on your word…because you went to the REAL HU!!! Thanks again Jade!!!!
Definitely lookin forward to true blood. My sis in law got me into that show, lol. And unecessary roughness, anything to do with football I’m in there. Nice choices. I’m watching.
You already got me into True Blood. But I cannot do Dallas 30+ years later. LOL I didn’t watch it then, and probably won’t now. Is Dynasty next on the list of revivals? I’d prefer Dark Shadows–oops, there’s True Blood. My bad. LOL Great preview of the summer sizzlers, Jade.
True Blood is over the top in term of shock value, have not seen Unnecessary Roughness.
Was anyone else dissapointed with Sunday’s first episode of True Blood? I’m a huge fan, but thought it was a little too outlandish if that is possible with this show. I interested to see how Tara responds to being a vampire. I’m also looking forward to the new characters, especially the new Vampire King or whatever his title is, regardless, I loved his grittyness on Oz, hope he brings the same bad boy character now that he will be in a position of power. Love my HBO series!
You are right Jade; Stacy Dash and Denise Vasi are very similar in character, personality and looks. Single Ladies was not one of my favorite shows last season…..this season is better….. Better (Eye Candy). LA Hair is still my favorite summer sizzler……Dallas… no can do. I watched Dallas years ago and loved the show…..not interested in watching the second time around. Thanks Jade for the update.
Thanks for the info Jade! I will DEFINITELY be tuned into some of these this summer! So far on your list, my FAVE has to be #LAHair! At first I thought it was going to be some type of knock off version of Viacom’s (VH1 network)’s Beverly Hills Fabulous! But clearly, in Kim Kimble’s salon they are all about DRAMA! While talent is shown equally, and both salons offer their full share of Drama, L.A. Hair gives that modern drama that is seen in Basketball Wives, Tanisha Gets Married, and Bad Girls Club! Also one other show you didn’t have on your list that I believe is a must see as well, Style networks Tia & Tamera, season 2! Love this list and can’t wait to see you Fall line ups Jade!
