Breaking Out Long-Lost Lipstick Faves Plus My Beauty Essentials for My Trip to NOLA
Even though I wait until the midnight hour to pack my bags (smh) I LOVE deciding which beauty products make it to the final cut when I travel. Each time I go away, I like to break out products I haven’t used in awhile. Normally I like to take as few things as possible (so the TSA can’t play soccer with my loot)—like when I went to Malibu for a commercial video shoot a few weeks ago, I brought very little with me, but since I’ll be in New Orleans for Essence Music Fest, I need enough supplies to get me to full-on drag!
One of the things I’m most excited about is breaking out some long-lost lip colors. Since I’m almost always on the run, I tend to wear the same makeup all the time save for changing my blush color or going for a pink-red instead of a blue-red…lol. Ya know, some variation of this…
So for my trip, MAC Lipsticks in Style Curve, Heroine, and Quick Sizzle plus YSL Rouge Volupte #18 will all be coming back like Jordan.
But here’s what else is coming along for the ride…
Makeup
YSL Touche Eclat: This has been an old fave that I haven’t really used lately until I saw that the brand recently introduced an even deeper shade (#7 Luminous Mocha) in this world-renown formula. Designed to help brighten just about anywhere on the face but particularly the tired under-eye area, I used this in shade #4 for YEAAAARS. Shade #7 is a bit of a milk chocolate with honey color that still brightens me up, but is more subtle than #4. I’ll be using both together for some magic this week.
YSL Faux Cils Shocking: My current go-to mascara of the moment. I’m normally of the “I’m not paying more than $8 for mascara” persuasion but have made exceptions three times already for a tube of this luxurious black-black formula that makes my lashes look thick, long, and voluminous.
MAC Cremeblend Blush in Optimistic Orange: This lovely bold cream blush will serve as the perfect layering tool for my foundation-less looks to ensure my blush stays intact. (sent to me by the brand’s PR)
Urban Decay Liquid Liner in Perversion: I haven’t gone the liquid liner route in a minute so figured I’d give this waterproof guy another run. I do prefer the previous packaging that UD Liquid Liner used to come in, so I may swap this one out for my beat-up looking old-but-still-good bottle.
Tom Ford Brow Sculptor: Meeting the man in person was one of the highlights of my year so far and I’m reminded of it every time I use this duo spooly and brow pencil. I love the slanted wedge shape of the pencil because it gets me perfectly filled in and natural looking brows. (sent to me by the brand’s PR)
Sleek MakeUP Contour Kit: I haven’t used this puppy in a while and it’s high time I got my contour/highlight on with it. This is one of the deepest contour powders I’ve seen and the fact that this kit is $10 is AMAZING. (sent to me by the brand’s PR)
MAC Smoky Eyes Palette: I’m of the no-fuss school of beauty so I don’t wear eyeshadow on a daily basis, but for hosting parties and begging for beads, I need some serious eye game action.
Make Up For Ever Eyeshadows in #18, #75, #92, and #99. Though I love a pop of color on the eyes, the days of it on me are tucked away in my early 20s. I’m not having a sudden resurgence—MUFE’s eyeshadows also double as blush. This is perfect for a rouge-fanatic like myself because I get four different colors in an easy-to-pack palette. Score! (sent to me by the brand’s PR)
Lashes: I’m taking my eye makeup looks to the next level with lashes! I normally save them for special occasions, but what’s more special than NOLA?
Face
Make Up For Ever HD in 178: I only plan on wearing this for evening festivities because it will likely be way too hot and humid for this on a daily basis. Though I have a gazillion different foundation formulas, this one has been my mainstay lately because it covers well while still remaining lightweight.
Make Up For Ever Super Matte Loose Powder in Caramel: My oily skin NEEDS this mattifying finishing powder. POINT. BLANK. I love that it doesn’t make me look like the Crypt Keeper even though it has a matte finish.
Estee Lauder Doublewear Stay-in-Place Concealer in Extra Deep: The pesky hyperpigmentation on my face that is still reeling its ugly head as it fades away is no match for this full coverage, long-lasting concealer. NO MATCH, I say!
Murad Hybrids Absolute Bronzing Boost: I just did a review on this about two weeks ago. This it’s-a-BB-cream-but-not-really-a-BB-cream gives me a subtle bronze glow whether on its own or underneath my foundation. (sent to me by the brand’s PR)
Mally Beauty Perfect Prep Primer: This has been my go-to primer for almost a year now. I love that it keeps my makeup intact—even cream-based makeup in the summer heat—all day long. (sent to me by the brand’s PR)
Skin
bareMinerals Deep Cleansing Foam: I’m on my third bottle of this since it first hit the scene. I love that it gets my oily skin clean without making it feel stripped of every ounce of oil.
Clarins Beauty Flash Balm: I sat at a Cosmo for Latinas blogger event last month between a Clarins rep and another beauty blogger who both went on about how much they love this product. I was so happy to get it home, but didn’t find the right time to break it out. Since it’s a “a balm that instantly moisturizes, brightens, and tightens facial contours so skin looks rested and relaxed”, it will be PERFECT for looking refreshed after a night of partying in NOLA. (sent to me by the brand’s PR)
Repechage Eye Rescue Pads: I tested these bad boys out during my stay in Malibu and LOVED how soothing they felt on my eyes. They’re especially great for after a flight.
Clinique Super Rescue Antioxidant Night Moisturizer: My go-to night creme for quite some time, I love how this makes my skin feel soft and supple while it fights against free radicals and early signs of aging.
bareMinerals Active Cell Renewal Night Serum: I got teeny sample from something I bought from Sephora and since it’s getting rave reviews, I’d like to give it a whirl. It works at night to deliver remarkably firm, healthy, and younger-looking skin. Sign me up!
Supergoop! Mint Fusion Lip Balm SPF 30: My lips can get pretty dry in the summer plus this is often a forgotten area when it comes to sun protection. I like this to condition my lips both before applying lipstick and at night before bed. (sent to me by the brand’s PR)
Peter Thomas Roth Max Sheer All Day Moisture Defense Lotion SPF 30: I just got this over the weekend as a 100-point Sephora VIB reward. We all know the importance of wearing and reapplying sunscreen, right? I get excited when a new one comes out so I’m definitely taking this one along for the NOLA ride.
Patyka Absolis Tea Tree Face Cream: My oily skin plus Louisiana humidity equals an extreme need for a mattifying lotion. I like how this one is lightweight, absorbs quickly, and doesn’t add an extra layer on my skin. You can check out my original review on it here. (sent to me by the brand’s PR)
Clarisonic Mia 2: I’ll be taking my at-home cleansing experience on the road with this bite-size Clarisonic. I want to be sure I get my skin as clean as possible after I take my makeup and the day off. (sent to me by the brand’s PR)
Would you believe that even with all of this, I still need to throw a couple more products into my bag (makeup brushes, tools, fragrance, toiletries, etc)…lol. Thank goodness I’m partnering up with Motions for the Motions Style Bar in my hotel (the W hotel Poydras) so I can skip packing hair products…lol.

LOL!
I’m not 100% sure they have 4 pan palettes—I got this one at a press event. *If* they do, they probably only have them at MUFE boutiques.
I’ll definitely update on my Nawlins adventures :)

Please tell me if you manage to keep your makeup intact/in place in that heat and humidity. I’m oily by nature, so of course I become a human oil slick in the south in the summertime. I envy people who can be in the heat and still look good.
I look like a deep-fried mess in that kind of heat, and the first and only time I was in NOLA, the humidity in LATE SEPTEMBER was enough to make my still relaxed on the ends hair look like a full fro (which I didn’t mind and was told looked fierce, but at that point didn’t behave that way up north where I was living).
So when I travel anywhere in the summer, you will NEVER see pictures of me since I look like I’ve been dipped in grease the whole time. And my hair hasn’t seen full humidity in a while so I don’t even know what it would do.
Hey Andrea!
For me it’s all in layering: a primer (my fave for the longest is Mally Perfect Prep Primer) helps keep everything intact (I’ll use a cream blush underneath a powder blush for longevity sometimes) and then I use a blot powder (or Starbucks napkins if I forget to pack my compact…lol) to touch-up shine throughout the day. I managed very well here today with makeup that had to endure two flights, a two-hour layover, and walking around Bourbon St for a few hours.

Hi what eyeshadows do you have in your MAC quad?
Hey! It was a pre-made quad from the Smoke Signals collection a few years back :)
Hi.
With the Sleek MakeUP Contour Kit, do you have the deep or the medium one?
Hey Krystina!
I have the Deep one :)
