Azealia Banks’s Hairstylist Shows Us How to Get Our “212″ On!

Are you as obsessed with Azealia Banks as I am? While we were all clamoring for her exclusive MAC Yung Rapunxel lipstick, celebrity hairstylist Liz Owusu was prepping the rap star’s hair for both her appearance at MAC Soho as well as for a SPIN Magazine party. And quite the hair it was. Owusu fashioned a style for the “212″ rapper that reached an amazing 30″ in length and colored in shades of violet and eggplant reminiscent of her signature lip color. It was three parts dope and two parts AMAZING! I sat down with Liz and asked her a few question on Azealia’s look. Check it out…

What is it like working with Azealia?

Working with Azealia was an honor! I remember watching the “212″ video earlier this year and saying, “I’d love to work with her one day.” So to have the opportunity was amazing. What makes it better is how cool she is. She’s a woman who knows what she wants and what she likes. I love that in a client.

Tell us about the look you created for Azealia for the SPIN Magazine event and the MAC Yung Rapunxel appearance? What products did you use?

Azealia loves long hair. And she loves Indique’s 30″ Pure Wavy, just like I do. So for her SPIN Magazine performance, we defined the waves by using two different sized curl wands and finished it with John Freida’s Frizz Ease Holding Spray.

For her MAC Yung Rapunxel lipstick launch and performance we went for a bold look by flat ironing her mane and wanding only the last 6-8″ of her hair finishing it also with John Freida’s Frizz Ease Holding Spray.

What are some ways everyday women can incorporate an Azealia-esque look into their style?

Azealia’s looks are very eye catching and ahead of the trends but I believe the everyday woman can still learn a thing or two from the fashion forward artist. Wear her plum lip, Yung Rapunxel for a night out with friends. You can couple that with Indique’s Pure Wavy Fishnet in 22″ to achieve her signature long luscious locks in an instant.

What are some tips to help keep color treated hair healthy?

Azealia is known for her head turning colorful tresses however, many people would never guess that she has a beautiful head of long natural hair. She keeps her own hair healthy by having fun w/color only on her extensions. And she maintains her color by using Dove hair care products. She loves using the Intense Damage shampoos and conditioners coupled with Dove’s Leave-In Conditioning Spray.

Where can we stalkfind you?

There are so many things in store for LizLovesHair! I’m looking forward to opening my salon in mid October in Bed Stuy, Brooklyn so stayed tuned for that. In the meantime, you can always reach me via email at lizloveshair@gmail.com or make an appointment at styleseat.com/lizowusu. I’m also on Instagram lizloveshair.

P.S. MAC sent over Yung Rapunxel last week and it’s definitely a hit! It’s an Amplified formula (my FAVE MAC lipstick formula, btw) and is a deep almost black raspberry plum. I just colored my hair so it’s a bit too dark for me, but when I go back to black, I’m ALL over it. It works well on virtually all complexions—the trick is to keep the attention on the lips and brighten up the complexion with a warm blush.

It’s available in NYC stores or online at maccosmetics.com for a limited time. Don’t worry if you miss it though—you can get a similar look with MAC Cyber and Film Noir.
