Sam Fine for Fashion Fair Overview: You Might as Well Go Ahead and Empty Your Wallet

So last night in nasty NYC rain (seriously, rain is ten times worse when you’re walking through Manhattan and bumping into everyone else’s umbrellas and what not), I hightailed it over to Union Square for a special blogger event to introduce the Sam Fine for Fashion Fair collection with Sam Fine himself.

Side note: don’t you think more people should have names that describe themselves perfectly? I mean, we all know Sam Fine is fine. And then if I keep my last name and start the aging process I’ll be Danielle Gray for real.

Anyway, back to the makeup. So Sam Fine introduced us to his new collection for Fashion Fair (he’s been the brand’s Creative Director since 2011) and his inspirations behind creating the gorgeous makeup that I’m about to talk about. One challenge the veteran makeup artist whose client roster boasts Tyra Banks, Iman, Vanessa White, Veronica Webb, Gabrielle Union, and many, many more of Hollywood’s most glamorous stars, is that Fashion Fair is a classic brand with a very specific audience. How would he be able to refresh the brand and give it something new without straying from its core? The answer: two gorgeous, highly pigmented eyeshadow quads that SCREAM glamour and eight lipstick shades that range from bold tangerine to red to a vampy deep purple, and brown-girl nudes that blend seamlessly into the skin.

First of all the packaging is completely luxe. Think Dolce & Gabbana or Tom Ford. It’s like even if you’re wearing a dirty tee and baggy jeans and then you whip out this packaging and all of a sudden you’re Dominique Deveraux. And don’t EVEN get me started on how the products feel. The eyeshadows are like siiiiiilk. After I got done playing around with the whole collection, we were given a palette and a lipstick of our choice to take home.

Note: I didn’t have my SLR with me at the event so these were taken with my iPhone.

I picked up Amalfi Coast which contains a forest green metallic, a deep brown matte, a cranberry metallic, and a sheer metallic gold. All four colors are AH-MAZING. Sam said when he was putting the collection together he wanted a green that showed up green on even the deepest of skin tones, a brown that you could use for a smoky eye that appeared just as brilliant on the skin (sometimes browns can be tough on dark skin) as it does in the pan and highlighting shades that didn’t look ashy. I’m already hooked on using the brown blended into the crease with the green on the lid. It’s just BEYOND.

The lipstick are also amazing. They’re very creamy and pigmented. Sam shared that he used the Pink Parfait shade on one of the looks for Gabrielle Union at the BET Honors which will air in February. I loved the brights, but I’m on a nude kick right now so I gravitated towards the nudes Deep Suede (perfect for deeper skin) and Champagne Toast (perfect for caramel complexions but can also work as a nice pink for darker skin).

Bottom line: You NEED to check this out. The packaging, the products, the performance are all 10s. Though the line caters toward women with deeper skin, the products can work on all races and ethnic backgrounds :)

Looks gorgeous. I want the Amalfi Coast just b/c it’s there. I have all of those colors but always claim that buying smaller palettes would result in me having less than a suitcase full of toiletries when I travel…seriously, who are these creatures who can fit all of the beauty products that they need into a carry-on bag with the draconian 3 oz rule?

The lipsticks are gorgeous but I really have all of those colors for reals, or something close. But not necessarily is shiny gold tubes, let me stop. I’m like Gollum with the shiny pretty things. “Yes, my precious…”

It’s so funny that I came across this blod post. I picked up the Amalfi quad as soon as it hit my local counter, I wasn’t able to get the lipsticks I wanted because the stock wasn’t even placed at the counter yet. I was looking for more swatches on brown skin and not having much luck. Thanks for this post, I already knew I wanted deep suede but now I will be getting pink parfait as well.

    Danielle,

I purchased the Amalfi Coast and it’s gorgeous; however, I need some help. The lady behind the counter was not familiar with the collection. Can you recommend/suggest how to wear three shades? I purchased it because I read your review; the green is beautiful.

      hey Candy!

I’m so mad at the lady behind the counter—even if she wasn’t familiar with the collection, I’m sure she’s seen eyeshadows before :(

Anyway, the world is your oyster with a palette like that. You can use each individual shade on its own as a single wash of color on the lids or you can do the following:

      * green on the lids with the brown in the crease and the sheer shade on your brow bone
      * a smoky eye with the brown shade
      * a smoky eye with the brown shade and the green as a pop of color on your bottom waterline
      * a smoky eye with the green color
      * a smoky eye with the plum-ish color
      * a smoky eye with the sheer color on the lid and the brown on the outer V (you can do variations of this with the plum and green on the outer V)

I mean, these are just a few that I came up with off the top of my head, but really the world is your oyster with this palette. You can also look through the makeup looks category on this blog for inspiration. I’d love to see what you come up with! Email me pics thestyleandbeautydoctor@gmail.com or tweet me @StyleNBeautyDoc.
