So yes, there are TONS of beauty boxes out there and each one serves its own purpose—but just like we all come in different shades, have different hair textures, and different beauty preferences, there needs to be some diversity in the beauty box world. And while items in beauty boxes like fragrance and skin care can be pretty universal, when you’re a Black girl and you get a light pink blush or extra fair foundation sample in your monthly loot, you kinda slide it to the side to giveaway to your lighter complected pals and wish that you could get some of the same high-end samples but in shades that better matched your skin.
And that’s what Black Girl Beauty is all about.
I attended a brunch over the weekend to celebrate the launch with so many beauty high-rollers—celebrity hairstylist Ursula Stephen, celebrity makeup artist Ashunta Sheriff, celebrity hairstylist Gabrielle Corney, Tia Williams of Shake Your Beauty and The Fly Cut, and so many more influencers and movers and shakers in the industry. Black Girl Beauty was founded by Krystal Thorpe, a name you may not know yet but she’s responsible for managing the careers of some of the biggest hairstylists and makeup artists in the industry who are responsible for many of the looks we’ve torn out of magazines, saved on our phones, or pinned to Pinterest boards. What’s really cool about that is those glam geniuses actually have input on some of the samples that get selected for the boxes each month. So like, in a really long drawn out way, you can say that you were “styled” by Rihanna‘s hairstylist and Janelle Monae‘s makeup artist…lol.

I got to take home the special inaugural box— I’m someone who gets full-sized beauty products delivered to me almost daily and even I was impressed! Inside is a .05 oz deluxe sample of Nude by Rihanna, a full size Tarte Amazonian Clay 12-Hour Blush (this one is Blushing Bride which is like a deeper and rosier version of NARS Orgasm), a full size of celebrity brow guru Damone Roberts’ Brow Powder (this one is in Miss Ross which is a great shade if your brows are black, but not black-black and you often find brow powders don’t match your hairs), a full size Morgan Taylor Professional Nail Lacquer (this is in La Dolce Vita), a .5 fl oz deluxe sample of Ojon Rare Blend Oil Total Hair Therapy, Mixed Chicks Pineapple Coconut Bar Soap, and a .3 fl oz deluxe sample of Origins Spot Remover Anti-Blemish Treatment Gel. Impressive, right?
Membership is just $20 a month and if you’re a woman of color and love trying out high-end beauty products, it’s worth checking out based on this inaugural box. Sign up at blackgirlbeauty.com.
