Wear This to Work Tomorrow: Bold Spring Basics

spring short sleeve trench orange pants work outfit idea

The term “basic” became synonymous with being boring, uncultured, and easily impressed by very little thanks to popular millennial lexicons (meanwhile I realized that I, too am classified as a millennial…lol), but when it comes to your wardrobe basics are certainly not BASIC.

I need to do another closet purge soon but the ultimate goal is to do a lot more with a lot less. Over the years I’ve conditioned myself to not buy as much clothes as I did when I was in my 20s and I’m definitely 50 million times better at that than I used to be, but the thirst does consume me from time to time…lol. Though I don’t have a need for a “work wardrobe” seeing as how I write about beauty and fashion on the internet from my living room, I’m really good at building work wardrobes. I have a previous corporate life (nearly ten years working in the financial services industry) and I like clothes so it’s a natural fit…lol.

One of my faves are unbasic-basics. These are items in your closet that fit you so well it seems they were made for you (might be a good idea to make a tailor your BFF), work well with SO many other items in your closet, AND have some sort of really interesting element about them that stands out but still keeps them a classic. Here it’s a pair of well-fitting trousers in a color that looks amazing with your own personal coloring, a fun button-down blouse, and topping it off with a short sleeve trench. All items are basic but have a fun twist to them.

Blouse is Ted Baker.

Note about these Outfit Idea posts: I use Polyvore to create them and only use clothing that doesn’t have models wearing them and that are visually appealing. Sometimes the exact item isn’t available or is SO super ridiculous expensive. I’ll always put the exact item when available in the widget, but I also include other similar options—if the exact item isn’t available, please shop from similar items. I also try to include options in different sizes and price ranges when available.
