When I first heard news of this NARS Velvet Lip Glide launch, I mistakenly assumed these would be NARS’ answer to the liquid lipstick. These are in no way like a liquid lipstick. In fact, they’re more of what it’d be like if a cream lipstick kept its formula but was put inside the same kind of container and applicator glosses come in.

It’s more of a semi-matte finish—it’s not going to dry down like liquid lipsticks do. They’re also not going to be super long-lasting, but NARS also doesn’t make the claim that they would be. You’d have to really be down for this type of formula to dig these. I’m not a fan—I prefer a more substantial lipstick that’s going to be long-lasting OR just a straight up gloss (I looooove gloss—especially those that are more opaque in formula).

NARS Velvet Lip Glide Official Description:

Covetable comfort meets confident color in a high-pigment formula that glides like a gloss, cloaks like a lipstick—and feels like nothing else. Semi-matte color glides on a stays supple without drying or feeling sticky. Developed with Oil Infusion Complex, an innovative concentration of precious oils, fused to create a smooth-glide effect. Fully coats lips on contact with smooth, saturated, semi-matte style.

Named for the personal power and play of ’70s counterculture, Velvet Lip Glide shades invoke the era’s new vibe with references to legendary venues and unforgettable attitude.

I find that these move around a bit too much for my liking, lighter colors (like the Bound shade I was given for review consideration) seem to go pretty quickly just from a simple bite to eat and sip of a drink. The brighter and deeper colors have more staying power because of the pigments, but still not my bag. I’m not saying these are terrible, but you’d have to be really committed to this type of formula and finish to like these. Which is what’s great about makeup—so many choices out there for our varying tastes and lifestyles.

Bottom line: NARS Velvet Lip Glide is a strong pass for me, but if you’re a fan of semi-matte lip color that is super incredibly, almost unbelievably comfy on the lips, and don’t mind having to touch-up a little more often, go in and let have.
