I’m SO excited—I’ve been a freelance writer full time since 2010 writing for websites like Styleblazer.com and Essence.com (and of course this blog) and it’s been my dream since I was a kid to write for a magazine. This is my first story published in a print magazine and I couldn’t be happier!!! *does cartwheels and trips* I quit a job in finance to work on my blog and other opportunities full time three years ago and it was super scary (and there were many of SUPER broke moments…lol) but things like this make me feel like She-Ra.

I won’t bore you all with a long sappy story, but this is to say to never give up on pursuing your dreams. I actually tried to get a job with a magazine after I graduated college in 2003—and it wasn’t even as a writer—it was as a receptionist and I was so sad when I didn’t get the job (years later the magazine folded) and then I had a long period where I wanted to get a job in advertising and couldn’t break into that field either. Girl, it was just a long drawn out mess and it got compounded by being 25 and comparing my lack of success to all my friends. But one day I decided to stop sulking and made the most out of my job selling investments and then ultimately managing a portfolio of business clients until I was ultimately able to leave in 2010. I’m a HUGE advocate of having vision boards because everything I put on mine has come true. EVERYTHING. Including my TV appearances.

So yes, please if you see Cosmo for Latinas on your newsstands, pick up the copy and check out my story! I know the magazine isn’t sold everywhere, but my pal Eboni from Fashionista Next Door was able to buy the digital copy on her iPad. And no, you don’t have to be Latina to read it—there are some Spanish words in it, but you can follow along (did I also mention I minored in Spanish in college and was conversational in the language? Yup! I used to use it a lot in previous jobs. I’m losing it because I don’t practice it as much, but I’m still pretty good :)

Hey Danielle, I’m so happy for you! And no, you’re not boring us with a long, sappy story…it’s great to hear the backstory. I can totally relate! I was having a crappy day on Wednesday just thinking about how I’m not where I want to be (and how things don’t seem to be happening fast enough) …and it’s stories like this that inspire me to keep going. It IS scary to go after your dreams, especially when it’s non-traditional. It really does take a lot of strength to continue when the odds don’t seem to be in your favor. Congrats again and thanks for sharing! :)

Haha—I was going to make the background story really long and sappy so that was the abbreviated version…lol.

It’s so easy to beat yourself about stuff like that (believe me, I did it to myself for like 3 years straight…lol) but I believe everyone has a specific path and sometimes that path leads you down roads you don’t necessarily want to be on, but those roads teach you things for your future dreams. Have you ever read the book “The Secret?” CHANGED. MY. LIFE. lol. My vision board and positive thinking is getting me what I want. Good luck to you—you’re doing amazing, Khadine!!!
