Okay so dry shampoo—half of you are probably all “OMG LOVE dry shampoo” while the other half might be like “um, what?”

So quick breakdown if you’re in the latter half: dry shampoos are essentially hair powders often scented with lemon and contain agents which absorb oils on the hair allowing you to extend a blow out, have some semblance of a hairstyle after a workout, or can add a little volume to limp, lifeless hair.

To refresh your scalp, simply hold the can (I prefer a spray can for ease and less mess) about 6 inches from the scalp and spray lightly at the roots. You may need to do some light “shampoo” motions with your hands to work it in.

To use it to add volume, tease the hair in sections but before each tease spray a little dry shampoo on the roots. I learned this and a few other cool hair tricks at Michael Duenas’ hairstyling for makeup artists class last year at The Powder Group ;)

Anyway, I noised my way around dry shampoos from back when I had a relaxer and Oscar Blandi was one of the first brands to launch a dry shampoo. Since then I’ve amassed a few faves that of course I’m totally about to share with you.

1. Rene Furterer Naturia Dry Shampoo (originally sent for review consideration)

Love the spray can format and love how quickly it can absorb oils and the white color blends in so my hair doesn’t look chalky.

2. Hair Rules Lift Volumizing Dry Shampoo (originally sent for review consideration)

I love this because it’s in a can like I like but the product dispenses well so you get just the right amount of product (too much can cause a white mess). I also adore the smell.

3. Pssssst! Dry Shampoo

Again, love the spray can, the formula blends in easily with my hair, and it does what it says it does.

You can’t go wrong with any of my three faves. These are all white in color and are formulated for straight hair. I don’t tend to need dry shampoo when I’m wearing my hair curly without extensions, but there are some formulas for curly hair if you were interested—I haven’t tried any yet so if you have faves, please chime in in the comments section. Also there are powders that are darker in color which I also haven’t tried since my three faves still blend in well with my dark hair.
