3 Outfits, 3 Lips

Blink and it’ll be fall. I actually felt pain typing that because I LOOOOVE summer…lol. But the one thing that brings me joy in knowing that summer is coming to an end is new fall makeup. Particularly lip colors. Specifically the velvet lip.

You might know the velvet lip by its alias “the matte lip,” but it’s all the same—full-on, no-shine, velvety color. Though I’ve been having a very glossy moment when it comes to lip color, I’m still here for mattes. They’re long lasting and you can wear it with just about any outfit with a velvet lip as long as you pick the right colors. I had so much fun when People Style Watch (side note: I just bought my September issue last night and it’s THICK and I cannot wait for a free lounging moment to dig right into it) asked me to pick out three outfits to pair with three velvet lip colors.

Outfit 1:

Fall is typically synonymous with darker color palettes but since when do we play by the rules? This fun and playful outfit practically cried out for a soft, but standout pink lip. I’m wearing Maybelline Color Sensational Matte Lipstick in Touch of Spice (get it at Ulta Beauty), a rosy pink with a very slight touch of brown. It’s a pretty daytime matte and also worked well with the colors in this outfit.

Outfit 2:

To be honest, I’ll wear a vampy lip whenever I want to but fall is definitely the most obvious time when the hue is most seen. For this lip I mixed NYX Cosmetics Soft Matte Lip Cream in Transylvania and Stila Stay All Day Liquid Lipstick in Fiery (get them both at Ulta Beauty). Sometimes a dark velvet lip can blend too much into my skin tone, so to avoid looking “washed” out I’ll mix in a brighter color and Stila Fiery is a great blue-red shade that gives a nice pop. I’ll also add a little more blush when I wear a dark velvet lip.

I went for a more casual vibe mixing a plaid button down with leopard print pumps and skinny jeans.

Outfit 3:

My third outfit was demure in color but sassy in the details. I paired it with L’Oreal Le Matte Velvety Full Coverage Lip Colour in Matte-R of Fact (get it at Ulta Beauty). I LOVE when a velvet lip comes in crayon form because it makes application a cinch—you can line and apply color in basically one step.
