Something You Need to Know About Oily Skin Once You Hit 30

This is going to be a pretty quick post because there isn’t a TON for me to say here (although I bet I can fit in some superfluous stuff in here…lol) but I wanted to quickly go over how oily skin can change as you age. Some of you have been here with me on this blog for yeaaars (yassss love ya’ll for that) and you’ve read posts where I talked about having oily skin and how it affects the products I use. Some of you also wind up using the same products I use because you have oily skin as well. I also assume most of you are around my age and may have also matured from your 20s into your 30s right along with me. So this post is a reminder for you that it might be a good time to do a quick evaluation of your skin and the products in your skincare and makeup routine.

So here’s the thing: as we age many things tend to happen to our bodies: everything aches, metabolism starts to slow, etc. But one thing some might overlook is that our skin type changes. That oily skin that used to plague us when we were teens and into our 20s? It might be still be a little oily now in our 30s, but it might not be *as* oily. This is partly due to a change in our hormones—we start producing less estrogen which has an effect not only on sebum production, but can also cause acne and facial hair. Our cell turnover rate (the rate at which our skin repairs itself) also tends to slow which can leave excess dead cells on the skin’s surface that lead to dull skin and other skin issues. Now if you were to continue to use the same products that helped balance your oily skin (because we BALANCE and DON’T obliterate oil around these parts), you might be doing the most and causing your skin to dry out. And you know what happens to dry skin—it can eventually lead to texture issues among other things that might require some heavy lifting to cure.

So what’s a girl to do? Treat it somewhat like you would treat changing your skincare routine as the seasons change which I’ve discussed here. Usually the biggest thing you might need to change in your routine is your moisturizer (though don’t rule out your cleanser and treatment products). It may actually be easy to find a new moisturizer since most skincare brands sell products for all skin types—it can be just as easy as switching to the more hydrating formula. I want to keep this post short and sweet because this topic will be discussed even more in future posts, but don’t forget to make sure your cleanser and treatment products are aligned with your current skin issues. For instance, a maximum strength acne cleanser can wind up thwarting some of the efforts of an extra hydrating moisturizer. Also note that some treatment products (i.e. benzoyl peroxide, retinol, etc) can be drying on the skin and you might need to lessen their usage, double up on the hydration, or find alternatives better suited for your skin.

In addition to your skincare, you might also need to tweak some of your makeup products as well–foundation formulas, primers, perhaps even some of your color products as well.

We’ll talk more about topics like this in the future, so make sure you’re subscribed to the blog so you don’t miss a thing.

Just a doubt…I feel like mine changed from oily to combination skin. Does this mean I can use products targeted for combinaton skin now?
