My 2014 Style Rewind

danielle gray the style and beauty doctor 2014 style rewind

2014 was a pretty interesting year for my style. I went from tomboy-ish and oversized to form-fitting and feminine-ish…lol. I also lost some weight (see how I did it here) and while I probably should have been following my own advice about how to dress when losing or gaining weight, I did not and was kinda buying clothes all the time…lol. Like I’d go down a size and buy something new immediately knowing full well that I wasn’t near goal weight yet. Ugh, but it was so fun and the clothes kept calling me…lol.

This year I started to find the time to take outfit pictures. I work from home and typically wear my pajamas all day unless I need to run errands and then I’m wearing jeans and sneakers unless I’m going more than like a 5-mile radius away from my house. But taking outfit pics has helped me tons and I recommend you guys all snap photos of your outfits even if you’re not a fashion blogger. I’m able to have a diary of photos to look back if I want to recreate an outfit and it helps looking at some of the photos when I’m not feeling so stylish…lol. It also can backfire when I look back at some outfits like “WHAT was I thinking?” but I still enjoy that, too. We live and we grow and same goes for our style.

So here’s a look back on some of my outfits for this year—if you want to see more check out My Style.

I will never not have a thing for faux fur coats. Never. See outfit details and more pics here.

I started to ask Nas to photo shop the extra flab of material near the crotch area on these faux leather pants because it kinda looked I was packing in the pics. But then I was like “meh. whatever.” and left it in…lol. See outfit details and more pics here.

So funny story—I find holiday the toughest season for me to dress for. I LOVE holiday clothing of course but I’m allergic to sequins (WHY when they’re so GOOD? waaaaaaaahhhhh) and sometimes cute festive pants come up way too high on my 5’9″ frame. But I loved shooting this holiday fashion post with Motions Hair and glad I pushed myself to find festive clothing in my style.

My homey Felicia from ThisThatBeauty had this skirt in grey and told me I needed the navy. You ain’t gotta tell me twice about some clothes I need…lol. I can’t wait to wear this skirt again.

Ever buy one piece and decide you need to create a look just for it? I try not to do that often but when I saw this skirt at MissGuided (a serious current obsession of mine), I HAD to have it. I also can’t wait to wear this skirt again—I’m thinking in the spring with a racerback cotton crop top. Hmm…

I did say in this post that I have a thang for buying faux fur scarves. This is more proof.

So normally I would have either not picked this shot to post or taken it over but this time I wasn’t mad that a little of my non-six pack abs are showing. By April next year I should have a two-pack if I play my cards right..lol. Also I bought like five more tops like the one I’m wearing here so expect to see them pretty often…lol.

My booty looked odd here which is what jogger pants can do to one’s backside but WHATEVER. I thought it was a cool shot and I was showing you one of five ways to wear an oversized scarf.

I. LOVE. THIS. SUIT.

Funny because after having to wear suits for ten years in my previous corporate job, I steered SO clear of anything that resembled a suit after I became a creative. But this suit had to be had.

h&m jumpsuit asos short sleeve coat DanielleMotionsFallGSZ-13

I’ve wanted a short-sleeve coat for the longest time and my fave ASOS came through for me with this one. I’m also wearing a jumpsuit. I like jumpsuits. A lot. LOL

These shorts are my FAVORITE ever and Gap BETTER come out with more just like them come summer. These were already too big for me before I lost weight and now that I’m down some pounds, they are ginormous. Gap, if you’re listening please make more just like this. PLEASE.

Also I need more colored walls like this one I spotted on a press trip to Chicago last summer.

Not much to see here outfit-wise, I just thought this was a cool shot in front of Chicago’s Field Museum…lol.

What? I like things that purposely have holes in them. Sue me.

Words cannot describe my love for camo print (still pissed my coat got confiscated in Trinidad back in February). I got these shorts from the men’s section at Old Navy which is one of my “tricks.” I find really cool stuff in the men’s departments at Old Navy, H&M, and sometimes Zara. The added bonus for me is that I get stuff with sleeves that actually cover my wrists.

I shot this pic with photographer Sylvia Gunde during an LA trip (where I got to cover the red carpet for “Think Like a Man Too”). I gotta find this blouse—I haven’t seen it in ages :x

From another trip to LA (I love visiting LA as you can see…lol) this time with my girls Trina from The Baby Shopaholic and Aracely from Mama Fashion Files. This trip was SO much fun because both of my girls LOVE to shop and when you go shopping with people who love to shop as much as you do—well it’s just—it just brings tears to my eyes…lol. Plus they’re so fly that being around them while shopping resulted in many fly purchases…lol.

What’s in store for my 2015 style:

1. Ha! I SURE did love my CelinĂ© Shadow sunglasses in 2014. When I like something—I like something…lol. Plus it’s so much easier to wear sunglasses when taking outfit pics (no need to worry about squinting when the sun or wind is in my eyes and no need to get rid of really good shots where my eyes are doing something weird…lol). But I’ll definitely start putting my other 50 millions pairs of sunglasses into rotation next year.

2. More crop tops. I’m OBSESSED. And nope, no need to have abs of steel to rock the crop—the trick is to give a sexy little flash of belly without showing your navel. Or show your navel if you want—life is too short…lol.

3. I NEED a pair of leopard slip-on sneakers. I bought a pair from Steve Madden but they ran small and they didn’t have an 11. I need a pair ASAP. I also need gold sneakers. I ordered these from Zara but won’t get to see them until I get back from Grenada. I hope they look good in person.

4. More cool pants. I’m obsessed with pants! I want cool pairs that have zippers coming up the sides, track pants ones, and a pair of leather joggers. All the cool pants must come my way.

5. *Maybe* shows some more skin. It’s funny how our personal style can cycle—I used to be all cleavage or legs not too long ago but now I prefer to be more covered up—I’m not wearing stuff up to my neck, but I’m also not wearing low-cut tops either. I may show a little more skin in 2015. MAYBE.

6. I might need to go on a shoe-buying hiatus. I have way too many—well, too many for me. I like a smaller closet so I can see everything I have so I can get dressed much easier. Right now I don’t have that kind of ease…lol.

7. Style videos! Lookbooks, how-tos, what to buy, etc. is all planned for next year when I revamp (perhaps restart is a better word here) my Youtube channel. I’ll let you all know when it’s ready :)

OK—that’s it for me for now. I’m heading to Grenada with my girls and for the next 10 days or so I’ll be bringing you some really cool posts from the Spice Island! Stay tuned and HAPPY NEW YEAR, guys! You have all been so amazing to me this year—seriously! I see other bloggers who can barely open up their laptop to type on their blogs before they get accosted by negative comments but you guys are the best. To 2015! :D
