Me vs. Tom’s Natural Deodorant

While studies have not shown a direct link between the use of antiperspirants and cancer (read here, here, and here), “natural” and aluminum-free deodorants are rampant enough for a girl to be curious. I’ve assumed—even without trying any—that they wouldn’t be able to handle my type of woman-ness…lol. It takes a lot to get around this glorious city and many of it involves being trapped in a hot subway station painfully waiting on “train wind” to cool you down. A girl needs some serious protection.

Just as I was thinking to myself that I should try a “natural” deodorant, the people at Tom’s of Maine sent over an assortment from their lineup. Over the last month or so I’ve been testing them out (and going back to my regular anti-perspirant deodorant in between).

I first tried the Long Lasting Unscented Aluminum-Free Deodorant and try as I might using it in different settings, it just didn’t work for me. Or maybe I didn’t work for it…lol. Since I’m used to using anti-perspirant deodorants, I wasn’t at all comfy with the “wet” feeling under my arms nor was I pleased with the scent (could that really be ME???? am I not a lady? lol). Then I moved onto the Naturally Dry Antiperspirant Deodorant which provides 24-hr wetness protection seemingly to everyone else but me. I didn’t feel dry nor even comfy enough to use this outside the house (I mean, if I can’t even get it to work for me while I’m in the home office…).

I did have some harmony though between me and the Long Lasting Aluminum-free Deodorant in the Beautiful Earth scent. It felt a little sticky at times, but I did stay fresher and drier longer with it than the other two varieties. I mean, this doesn’t mean I’m abandoning my regular antiperspirant deodorant, but at least I have another option.

Bottom line: Obviously our bodies are all different so your experience with these may be different than mine, but if you’re looking to be a little more conscious about your deodorant products (and you’re not trying to do the whole baking soda or lemon out-of-the-kitchen route), Tom’s is worth looking into in your search of products to try.
