Quick Review: Neutrogena Ultra Light Cleansing Oil

Ever since cleansing oil hit the scene stateside a few years ago, I’ve been obsessed. They’ve been part of my makeup-removing double-cleansing routine since, but cleansing oils have actually been used in parts of Asia for wayyyyyyyy longer than that. You can see the cleansing oils I’ve reviewed here.

As of late more cleansing oils are showing up in the drugstore aisles and because I’m part skincare product junkie and part skincare nerd, I wanted to also have some more affordable alternatives to some of the skincare products I talk about here. See more in drugstore vs department store.

So today we’re talking about Neutrogena Ultra Light Cleansing Oil which was sent to me for review consideration.

Neutrogena Ultra Light Cleansing Oil official description:

NEW Neutrogena Ultra Light Cleansing Oil completely cleans skin and removes makeup, even waterproof mascara, with no greasy residue. This lightweight formula contains a blend of fine oils that act like a magnet to effortlessly and effectively extract oil and impurities.

-Leaves skin feeling soft and healthy every day.
-Non-comedogenic (won’t clog pores)
-Ophthalmologist tested
-Dermatologist tested

Cleansing oils are typically part of a two-part (or sometimes three-part) cleansing process: you use the cleansing oil on dry skin with dry hands (DRY is important or the product won’t work as intended) to remove makeup, dirt (ewww), and oil, wash it off and then move onto a gel or water-based cleanser. See more about this in my double cleanse video.

I did find the texture of the Neutrogena Ultra Light Cleansing Oil to be a bit thin—especially in comparison with all the cleansing oils I’ve tried. It still did its job but it took more product for me to get all of my makeup off. I personally would rather just fork over the $30 for my current fave boscia MakeUp BreakUp Cleansing Oil (see my review here). But if you’ve never tried a cleansing oil before and are watching your beauty budget, you might not notice the difference.

Bottom line: Neutrogena Ultra Light Cleansing Oil does its job but I’m not a fan of the texture since it takes more product to get it done. This may not be a deal breaker for some (hey, we all have different preferences) and for $8 vs the price of some of the department store cleansing oils, if you’re watching your beauty coins you might not mind the difference.
