Quick Review: Maybelline Superstay Foundation Stick on Dark Skin (w/ Swatches)

Maybelline recently sent over the 16-shade range of the Maybelline Superstay Multi-Use Foundation Stick Makeup for review consideration—here I’ll be focusing on the shades on the deeper end. I was excited to see they had a stick in this formula and also in shades I could use for my base as well as to highlight and contour with.

Official Description:

Super Stay® Multi-Use Foundation Stick Makeup is formulated with a cream-to-matte finish and pointed blender sponge for easy and quick application at home or out on the town.

Whether you’re looking for a cream foundation or a contour foundation, this multitasking stick is a must-have essential that conceals, contours, highlights, and covers. Our 1st all-in-one foundation stick features a cream-to-matte foundation and a precision pointed blender sponge that is perfect for applying cream foundation at home or touching up your look on-the-go.

Long story short, I don’t love it. I tested it out for three days and every day I didn’t love it. For one thing, the shade 360 Mocha, which I can wear in the Maybelline Fit Me Matte & Poreless line, seemed to make my skin look greyish (there’s a number of reasons why the same shade name in a brand in different foundation formulas can look slightly different). Then the cream to powder formula which feels incredibly smooth, also made my skin look incredibly dry. Which is QUITE a feat to accomplish considering I have oily skin and it’s hot to the tenth power this summer in NYC. It also didn’t hold up well on me at all. By the end of the day it was very greasy and patchy.

They DO cover well though. I like that you can layer them wherever you need more coverage. I also liked that I had viable shade matches to highlight and contour with despite me not loving the formula. Now 16 shades does sound stingy especially considering Maybelline’s Fit Me Matte and Poreless comes in 40 shades, but this shade range is actually able to be somewhat vast even in just 16 shades. I’m guessing the brand is testing the product to see if it’s going to stick around on shelves (you know how some of these drugstore brands discontinue products and launch new ones pretty often).

Bottom line: Maybelline Superstay Foundation Stick is a strong pass for me. I’m hoping maybe Maybelline will expand the shade range in the Fit Me Foundation Stick because that sounds like it would be more up my alley. If you like a cream to finish foundation formula and can find a match in one of the 16 shades, go in and let have. There are people out there that actually like it and have been leaving reviews on the Maybelline page. The poor reviews on ULTA mirror more to what I mentioned here in this post.

Price and where to buy: The 16 shades (currently their latest shade extension) is currently exclusive to ULTA and you can get it here at $11.99 each. Get up to 2.5% cash back when you use eBates.
