Fooling Winter by Dressing in All the Prints and Color

Look, winter is tough—I have lived in NYC all my life and have already gone through 36 winters—but we don’t have to avoid good fashion sense because it’s cold and we also don’t have to sacrifice warmth to look cute. Dressing fab in the winter is all about the right coat and colorful accessories—most people only see your coat and your accessories, so give them a party, honey. You can be layered to the gawds underneath, but give people something to see where they can see it ;)

And yes, I realize it’s technically not winter yet, but we’ve had some winter temps lately AND winter *IS* coming very soon.

I almost HAVE to dress in layers because the weather can be unpredictable (like 55 degrees one day then below freezing the next and then back up to the 50s smh) and I get hot-cold easily (it’s when it’s cold but because I have to move around with warm clothes on, I get hot and sweaty), so my couch coat is a good piece—especially as it’s still 60% off. I like to wear sunglasses in the winter because well, 1. the sun is still out and 2. I like the slight protection for my eyes from things like the wind. Though I’m normally in either my Tom Ford Christophe or my Celine Shadow sunglasses, I got these colored shades because they looked really cool online so I took a chance and ordered them. Then I had an idea to match them to accessories for a cool pop of color. I happened to decide to browse a Nordstrom Rack and found the earmuffs—they were awesome to pair with the sunglasses so voila!

I love to mix prints—it’s so fun, whimsical, and it really allows me to get the maximum use out of my wardrobe pieces. This time of year I’m also very much drawn to embellishments like sequins and metallics, so my zebra print Zara jeans and sequin booties (which I got for like $15 during one of the sales last year) added to the look. My sweater which I also got from Zara a few months ago went so nicely with the color scheme of the sunglasses and the earmuffs—these are the kind of pleasant surprises you have with your wardrobe when you consciously buy things that are great for your coloring and personal style.

In my day, if we dressed with mixed prints, everyone would look at us sideways thinking we’e gone coo-coo. Now, I can go into my closet and put anything together and ‘m fashionable. Wow!!! Thanks, Danielle M. Gray.
