A Guide to Cover FX Foundation

Read ALL about my review process including how I take swatches, photos, and more here.

cover fx foundation guide

Whoever says that a girl needs just one foundation is clearly tripping. In just one week I can make cases for having at least three different formulas. Things like aesthetics, coverage needs, weather, the occasion, and so much more can factor into which foundation I use at any given time. Which is another reason why I absolutely LOVE Cover FX. Not only does the brand offer so much in terms of shade range (they go from very fair to very deep and include tons of undertones) but they also offer so much in terms of formula and coverage. And as a Cover FX Beauty Ambassador, I thought it was within my beauty girl duties to give you a guide on which ones I love the most as well as the ones that will work best for your skin type and lifestyle.

Cover FX Foundation Guide

So as I mentioned Cover FX is a brand that includes SO many shades and undertones. Undertones (you can read more about them in my Foundation 101 post from yeaaaaars ago) fall into three categories: P (pink) N (neutral) G (golden). And then within each undertone category, there are a number of shades—the higher the number, the deeper the shade. For reference I’m shade N110.

Then you get into the different formulas and coverage options as follows:

Liquid

Cover FX BB Gel Mattifying Anti-Blemish Treatment

I love that it’s lightweight and mattifying making it perfect for summer (my oily skin LOVES it) but it also gives a nice coverage that helps to even out the skin tone. And it also helps to fight acne with 1% salicylic acid.

Cover FX Natural Finish Oil Free Foundation

You know—I find that I don’t use this as often as I should but that’s because I met Cover FX Total Cover Cream first…lol. But it gives a gorgeous, natural finish and I need to put it into rotation more often.

Skin type: All
Coverage: sheer to full (buildable)
Perfect for: just about anyone who loves a liquid formula and any situation
The technical stuff: Vitamins C and E soothe inflammation and reduce redness while protecting against premature skin aging, and anti-inflammatory and moisturizing properties protect against damaging environmental factors. Cream

Cover FX Total Cover Cream

This is my FAVORITE Cover FX foundation and I use it the most out of any foundation I own. It’s a cream formula with full coverage BUT it’s SO versatile and can be sheered down for lighter coverage while you can also easily layer it for more coverage if you need it. Even with full coverage it looks like your skin but better making it perfect for covering discoloration. And because it’s so versatile, I can wear it even in the heat of the Caribbean to the coldest NYC winter day.

Powder

Cover FX Pressed Mineral Foundation

I love the versatility of this foundation—you can wear it on its own (I’ll use Cover FX Cream Concealer in spots where I need it and then apply it) or you can use it to set any other foundation.

Skin type: All (really great for oily skin)
Coverage: sheer to full (buildable)
Perfect for: easy breezy days when you want an easy and quick application especially in the summer.
The technical stuff: Available in 24 global shades, this foundation provides a healthy, sheer to full coverage matte finish with oil-absorbing microspheres and moisturizing benefits. Its finish is never cakey or drying to the skin.

Another great thing to know about Cover FX foundations? They’re all free of the Inflammatory Five: gluten, mineral oil, fragrance, parabens or talc.

The look I’d create with Total Cover Cream is a gold e/s on the inner lid and dark brown e/s on the outer lid, a gold highlighter on the cheekbones and a blue pink matte lipstick.

I’d create a basic look, a little nude eyeshadow or maybe just eyeliner and a bold lip. I tend to shy away from bold lip colors and I want to change that. so yeah, neutral eye, bold lip, great, flawfless face.

    August 29, 2014 / 4:48 pm

I’d due a neutral face, a pinkish nude lip and a navy eyeliner for a pop of color.

    August 30, 2014 / 6:19 am

I have 40 year old oily skin. In the last year I’ve been experiencing the dreaded hormonal acne that leaves hideous dark spots on my face. I find that my usual Bare Minerals doesn’t cover them as well as I’d like. I love the mineral makeup, but I just need more coverage. Until I read this blog post, it has NEVER occurred to me that a girl can have several different types of foundation in her collection! Go figure! I am definitely going to try Cover FX. Thanks for always giving awesome advice and tips for women of color.

    August 30, 2014 / 12:51 pm

I’d create a natural look with the Total Cover Cream. Eyeliner, mascara, blush, a nude lip, and filled in eyebrows. I’m rather simple and tend not to wear makeup on a regular basis. However, I’ve been looking for a foundation for special occassions that evens out my skintone and doesn’t look dry or cakey. Your pictures definitely sold me.

I’d create a natural look with the Cover FX Total Cover Cream Foundation. I like to keep my makeup looks simple when I wear makeup. Some mascara, blush, eyeliner, filled in eyebrows, and a nude lip is what I like. However, I’ve been looking for a foundation for special occasions that evens out my skin tone for a flawless look. Your pictures definitely sold me and I’d really to try the line out.

I have hyperpigmentation from acne I had since I was a teenager till now, aka present day problems.

I usually wear coverfx with powder to set it (I like the perfect skin look, so I dont really do blush anymore), golden brown metallic eyes with a swept of brownscript in the crease to brighten my complexion. Lips lightly polished with Fresh lip balm and a setting spray to keep my face together :).

    September 7, 2014 / 11:38 pm

I have never tried this brand before, but due my ever changing skin types as it relates to changes in the weather, I’d be elated to win! I’d use it to cover age spots, freckles, and other blemishes like hyper and hypo pigmentation which poses a problem for many women of color. During the winter months, it’s extremely hard to find a concealer/foundation that doesn’t appear cakey especially around the eye area. It’s also quite hard to find a product that doesn’t leave you feeling/looking like an oil slick during warmer months. For these reasons, I’d really wanna give this product a try as I’ve heard amazing reviews on it!!!!

  57. September 8, 2014 / 7:50 am

I use the natural finish foundation in NC 70 in the winter. I’ll definity have to check out the cream foundation.

I was color matched with this at Sephora by one of the stylists after I asked her to match me to a Kat Von D foundation. They didn’t have my Kvd shade and she said to me after looking at my skin “nah I’m going to give you something that’s going to actually work for you.” She gave me the CoverFX Total Cover Cream Foundation and it’s changed my life. She matched me with the correct undertone (MAC always told me I was warm when I’m really neutral), gave me a N110 (I’m darker in the summer), and I bought it that day. I’ve never hit pan on a foundation until CoverFX! LADIES GET YOU SOME!!!

  64. Kim Pitts
    September 10, 2014 / 9:58 pm

I would use the Cover FX cream to create a flawless, yet natural look. Since it’s buildable I would go for a lighter application. Pairing this with a neutral, brown/plum smoky eye for day time and a bolder vampy lip.

  65. September 10, 2014 / 10:36 pm

I would create a natural, dewy look, with highlighted cheek bones for my dry skin. With a bold lip of course! :)
