How to Snag Off Duty Style

If there is one term that could probably describe the way I dress to run errands or hit casual outings with friends, “off duty style” is definitely one. So when Hanes asked me to team up with them once again (I shot a super fun shoot for them with Nas last year—check it out here) I was already excited because they have some of the most comfy tees and undies (seriously, check out some of the cuteness here) but when they said the theme was Off Duty Style, I was all in.

A little backstory in case you’re like “Wait. Off duty what?”…

So off duty style is a fashion term coined for the amazing way models dress when they aren’t gracing the runways or magazine editorials. You’ve seen pics of models like Joan Smalls, Ajak Deng, and Chanel Iman KILLING it and all they had on was a tank top, some skinny jeans, fab sunglasses, and sneakers. THAT is off duty style. It’s taking well-fitting basics and mixing them in with your best pair of jeans, jackets, pumps, and accessories and making it look like you’re this fab international fashion model who just happens to be doing her groceries…lol. It’s mixing high-end with lower-end pieces. This is SO me. I really love how the new Hanes pieces like the t-shirts, sweatshirts, tanks, and stretch pants are cut in a form-fitting but yet super comfy way. You can tell a lot of detail and care was put into making the collection and best yet, they’re all at really affordable price points. Plus they work well with pieces from my wardrobe.

Off Duty Style Tips/How-Tos:

1. So what off duty style is NOT is throwing on any old sweatpants and baggy tee. It’s not messy and it’s not what you wore to class in college after you literally rolled out of bed. It’s a balance between comfy and chic.

2. Off duty style pays attention to fit, cut, and of course style. Like I mentioned, Hanes has some amazing basic pieces to help you start the foundation for your off duty style look, but be very mindful of fit. I sometimes sized down in tees so I could get a fit that looked like it was made for me.

3. Mix in statement pieces. I LOVE clothes and I LOVE buying new clothes but I also realize that too much of a good thing isn’t necessarily a good thing for me when it comes to my closet. Less is more for me so having a few “statement pieces” like a biker jacket, fedora, designer sunglasses, cute bags, and of course amazing shoes helps to elevate my off duty look.
