The Wonders of MAC 188 Brush…

Read ALL about my review process including how I take swatches, photos, and more here.

I’ve sung the praises of the MAC 187 brush for years since it first hit the scene some five or six years ago. The duo fibre brush works wonders to seamlessly apply liquid foundation, powder, blush, creme blush, luminizer, bronzer…basically you get more than your $42 worth because this brush is super multitasking.

Then MAC brought out the 188, a smaller version and I largely ignored it because I felt I didn’t need it without having tried it. That’s prejudice, ya know.

Then I started freelancing for MAC and guess what was in my brush belt? The 188 brush. It’s weird because without even thinking about it my hand sort of gravitated towards it whenever I helped a client try on concealer or foundation. Typically I use the 217 brush to apply concealer when I’m doing someone else’s makeup, but the 188 gave me such a seamless look and blended (even thicker formulas like Studio Finish Concealer) like a dream. It’s great to buff foundation into smaller areas of the face like around the hair line and by the ears to help avoid that foundation mask look. What did I ever do without this brush???

So after using the 188 brush at work, I went home and oddly enough couldn’t stop thinking about it (I swear I lead a sane, healthy life that doesn’t solely involve obsessing over makeup) so I marched down to MAC and picked it up. For disclosure purposes I did receive a professional makeup artist discount when I bought it, but shoot it’s still a good deal full price.

Bottom line: While you don’t necessarily *need* this brush, it does make blending concealer and foundation soooo much easier.

    Hi Danielle,

I want this brush. Can I use this brush to apply my highlighter?

      Hey!

You sure can! It’ll be more concentrated than if you used a bigger brush like the 187, but go easy and use a light hand :)
